What is the Kaimanawa Decent?

It's an unforgettable 22km downhill mountain biking adventure through one of New Zealand’s most remote alpine regions.
Designed for intermediate to advanced riders (Grade 3), this experience begins with a breathtaking helicopter flight from our base to the trailhead on the Patutu Tops, perched at 1673m. From there, the first 10km takes you flowing down through open alpine tussock country with panoramic views across the Central Plateau and the volcanic giants of Tongariro National Park. The final 12km winds through pristine native mountain beech forest — a fast and flowing singletrack that twists and turns all the way back to our base on Waipakahi Road.

• Total descent: Nearly 800 vertical metres (just under 2500 feet)

• Ride time: Approx. 2–3 hours, with plenty of time to soak in the scenery

• Bike-friendly: We welcome both E-Bikes and regular mountain bikes

Tyre restrictions: Max tyre width is 2.8 inches (7.1cm) — sorry, no Fat Boys
